+ UK IN STORE TOUR INCLUDES ROUGH TRADE EAST ON FEBRUARY 2
January 20, 2023: Seattle musician SYML has today released “Chariot”, the latest track to be lifted from his forthcoming album The Day My Father Died, available February 3, 2023 via Nettwerk, pre-order/pre-save here.
SYML - the solo project of singer, songwriter and producer Brian Fennell – will follow the album’s release with a major headline European Tour in the Spring, taking in several UK shows including London’s KOKO on April 19th. Ahead of these dates, SYML will be in the UK for an in-store tour album’s release including a performance at London’s Rough Trade East on Thursday February 2nd.
SYML was recently announced as one of the guest artists on the forthcoming Lana Del Rey album Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, out March 10th.
For The Day My Father Died Fennell enlisted the skills of renowned indie producer and fellow Seattle native Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill, Band of Horses), recording in studios – including a former church – around Seattle.
“Chariots are for royalty,” comments Fennell of the new track. “They are golden and precious vessels reserved for people who deserve it. For this song though, I imagine my chariot to be a vessel of love and deliverance that carries me to a peaceful place. We recorded most of the album at Studio X in Seattle, which is an old church. A lot of the percussion and drum beat on this song were played on old church pews in the studio.”
Fittingly, SYML’s music has a sacred quality, with themes that tap into the instincts that drive us to places of sanctuary, whether that be a place or person. With over 9 million monthly listeners on Spotify and more than a billion streams in total, these themes are resonating all over the world and particularly in the UK, one of his biggest territories for listeners.
The new album finds Fennell telling a story of interpersonal connection and chosen kinship following the death of his adoptive father in 2021. More a document of growth and healing than of loss, the album charts Fennell’s journey to figure out how to move forward after a fundamental and intractable shift in his life.
“The ever-expanding universe will always frighten and delight me, but the truly unbelievable shit happens down here at our human level,” Fennell says. “Losing my dad felt like running out of air. I still feel it in my gut. But this record is not about losing him, it’s about what happens after we have lost.”
Born and raised in Seattle, Fennell studied piano and became a self-taught producer, programmer, and guitarist. He released his self-titled debut album in 2019, which included the platinum-selling song “Where’s My Love,” followed by the grief-stricken EP DIM released in 2021. His music has been featured in countless movies, TV series and ad campaigns including Netflix’s original series “Behind Her Eyes,” which featured his version of “Mr. Sandman” as the title track.
Also available now from The Day My Father Died are "Lost Myself" Feat. Guy Garvey, "Howling" Feat. Lucius, “Better Part of Me (feat. Sara Watkins)”, and "Believer".
