After a brief hiatus over the pandemic where she spent time journaling about her personal experiences, British alt-pop artist Starling returns with her empowering, summer girls anthem “Cool Girl”, an energetic pop tune about her evolution as a young woman navigating personal relationships on a journey towards self-discovery.
The track showcasing Starling’s newly found self-confidence over vibrant synths, a solid pop groove, and an infectious uplifting hook as she readies herself to deliver her long-awaited new EP in the coming months.
On the track she recalls how she would bend the truth about her feelings in order to be seen as “cool” and “easy to love” or ''be loved''. A few years later and a couple of therapy sessions in, she relishes in the growth of realising it is cool to be honest, to be authentic, to be really who you are and that ''Feelings are there to be felt'' but who hasn't tried to hide feelings to be more palatable!? Written in LA and produced in New York, “Cool Girl” really is a summer pop anthem for girls and women who want to enter their give-no-fucks era.
Adding about the new track, she said, “Cool Girl marks the new sound of pop meets therapy, sad meets hopeful, light meets dark - I want my music to encompass all parts of me and therefore, free all parts of you, the listener. We are all so multi-faceted and full of so much hope as well as fear, sadness, grief - it is safe to be it all.. at least, that is what I would like to share through my song.”
Later this Summer she'll embark on a series of 'home concerts'. She came up with the idea to give back to her fans by offering them concerts in their living-room. Calling on her Instagram followers, she had 21 shows confirmed in the first week and is aiming to do a total of 30 shows across the UK over the summer.
Over recent months she’s worked with a number of seasoned producers and collaborators in London, Dublin and LA (including Ollie Green, FlashThedeliveryGuy, Pearse McIntyre and others) on songs that reflect her evolution as a young woman and female artist whose message is focused on empowering and uplifting her listeners.
Discovered by Massive Attack whilst working as a waitress in London, she has been championed by prestigious magazines and tastemakers including Wonderland, The Guardian, CLASH, The Line of Best Fit to name a few while her music has found its way onto over 18 Spotify 'New Music Friday' playlists across the globe. Her sound, a blend of sophisticated/edgy pop with a message of courage and resilience, has already been compared to the likes of Ellie Goulding and Florence of Florence And The Machine.
With a stage presence often compared to Lorde, Starling's upcoming EP promises a collection of fiercely vibrant pop songs and content; all of which make the future very bright for Starling—a rising star with a powerful message.
Beyond her music, Starling is a respected motivational speaker both within her music community (aptly named ‘Starlingsworld’) and within the London scene with a monthly podcast at Soho House, featuring conversations with industry luminaries like Sian Clifford from 'Fleabag'.
