After more than two decades as the guitarist for world-dominating outfit Snow Patrol; selling seventeen million albums, achieving five UK platinum albums, an Ivor Novello award, as well as Grammy and Mercury Music Prize nominations, Nathan Connolly has now released his long-awaited debut solo album ‘The Strange Order Of Things’, showcased by the new Ailbhe Reddy collaboration ‘Ghost’.
Separating from his previous project Little Matador, who released their self-titled debut LP in 2014, his new solo venture looks to be a more intimate but still collaborative affair. Featuring guest appearances from Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro, and Irish artist Ailbhe Reddy, as well as long-time collaborators Dave and Herb Magee (LaFaro, Little Matador, Arvo Party), Stephen Leacock (General Fiasco) and Gavin Fox (Turn, Idlewild, Little Matador), his newest venture looks to mark a seminal moment in his career to date.
Connolly describes the album as “trying to understand, make sense and work through events that have led to who I am now: heartache, regret, emotional cost, fatherhood.”
Following up the previously unveiled lead single ‘Fires’, which featured the instantly recognisable voice of Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil, the record’s focus track ‘Ghost’ displays some of the release’s more euphoric moments. Teaming up with the trailblazing Irish singer-songwriter Ailbhe Reddy on vocals, this new offering showcases a wonderfully bright and immersive aesthetic, reminiscent of the album as a whole.
Speaking about the release he says, “I’m so delighted that The Strange Order Of Things is finally out. I’m very proud of it and incredibly grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life. Thank you all. N x
Adding about ‘Ghost’, Connolly said, "I always had the idea that Ghost could possibly be a duet but I was struggling to emotionally connect with it until Ailbhe did her thing on it. I was listening to Ailbhe’s record at the time, Between Your Teeth in particular and loved her voice. So I thought I would reach out to her and invite her to be part of it and wonderfully she said yes. She completed the track for me."
Nathan Connolly began working on his solo album with producer Rocky O’Reilly in Belfast in 2017. After a lockdown-imposed hiatus paused Snow Patrol’s touring plans, he was then able to finish the project in early 2021. “Although the album is not about home,” says Connolly, “I felt compelled to make it there.”
