With their comeback single ‘Perfectly Untrue’ receiving praise from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, stating “I’ve rinsed this thing! It's a haunting pop song”, as well as landing on Spotify's NMF UK, New Noise (US), The Alt List (US) and the cover of The Rock List (UK, Deezers 'Brand New UK' and Apple Music - New Music Daily UK, Breaking Alternative and New In Alternative playlists, Lucia & The Best Boys now return to unveil the striking new official video for their latest offering.
Lifted from their upcoming new EP ‘The State Of Things’, out October 9th via Sweet Jane Recordings, ‘Perfectly Untrue’ sets the beginning of a new chapter in their catalogue, and these new visuals give us a strong taste of their newest aesthetic. Inspired by the story of Saint Sebastian and directed by Rianne White, the video shows frontwoman Lucia Fairfull adopting numerous guises in order to create multiple versions that reveal a darker understanding of self, and championing symbolic insights of perceived behaviour.
Speaking about the new video, White said, “Lucia drives both the bravado and beauty of femininity across vignettes that contain an emotional distortion of reality. We see her transform between a striking contrast of manic caricatures and intimate states of purity and vulnerability.
“The story of Saint Sebastian is a metaphor threaded throughout the visual narrative — piercing Lucia through the chest with an arrow. This symbolic representation of Lucia wearing her emotional wounds as armour, paralleled with the posed smiles and theatrics of the clown, illuminates our own relationship with our need to perform to cope with emotional pain.
“These multiple versions of self appear through glass, reflection and shadows, which further distorts a twisted darker truth of all that is perfectly untrue.”
The band have also been working with renowned fashion designer Charles Jeffrey - winner of the British Emerging Talent Award at Fashion Awards 2017 - who dressed Lucia for the video and for their recent press shots in his latest collection LOVERBOY.

Adding about his work on the video, he said, "It’s an honour to have someone so creative and with a voice like that wearing LOVERBOY, for me she is the perfect person to wear those clothes. LOVERBOY has always been about making you a bigger version of yourself so what a great project to align on!"
Following the release of their much-loved EP ‘Eternity’ earlier this year, ‘The State Of Things’ includes the previously shared offerings ‘Let Go’ and ‘Perfectly Untrue’, alongside new cuts 'Forever Forget’ and ‘Somewhere In Heaven’, and sees them deliver a more sombre and atmospheric release throughout. Cinematic in its nature ‘The State Of Things’ is nostalgia-laden and soaked in heartbreak and its production can transport you back to some classic movie moments.
Stepping back from the bold and heavy-handed riffs that dominated their earlier offerings, this new EP captures more of their warm and euphoric intentions with its broad and captivating aesthetic and sees Lucia channel some of the incredible female artists that have influenced her including Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush and Miley Cyrus.
Speaking about the new collection, front-woman Lucia Fairfull said, "To me this EP is like a fairytale, telling a story from a period of time in my life. It has only been since I stepped out of that time that I have managed to understand the different emotions I was feeling, through listening back to it. I think going back and listening to our previous EP’s like 'Cheap Talk' shows me I feel more comfortable and open within songwriting than before. It was a challenge to throw myself out my comfort zone at a time where all I wanted was comfort. I decided to get away from distractions, go to L.A. and write and record these songs in a new setting with change of scenery in hope that I could write genuine and transparent songs about my first real experience of heartbreak. Every song on the EP sits in its original demo form, which I feel, makes them more raw and sentimental. I think they will continue to resonate with me in different ways throughout my whole life and will be a constant guide to help me get through strange times, and I hope it can do the same for others. They are my own Great American Songbook in a way I guess!"
With the EP’s initial single ‘Let Go’ dropping back in May, which was recorded in LA alongside Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet after the band met him at a party after SXSW a few years ago, and ‘Perfectly Untrue’ arriving in September, ‘The State Of Things’ marks a new beginning for Lucia & The Best Boys. With frontwoman Lucia Fairfull offering up more of those bold and passionate vocals throughout their newest release, it shows them exploring more atmospheric tones, and moving away from the gritty and grizzled sound of their earlier work.
Lucia & the Best Boys will be performing the EP in its entirety for a filmed live session for BBC Radio Scotland // BBC Introducing this October, and were also announced as main support for Dream Wife on their 22-date UK and European tour in April-May 2021. Full list of dates below:
