August 14st 2019 saw the unveiling of Guinness’s new ad campaign soundtracked by Austrian duo Cari Cari’s single ‘ANAANA’. To tie in with the launch Cari Cari, who’ve been described as “the lovechild of The Kills and The XX”, unveil the striking video for the single. Watch the video HERE
“As a blackbelt-judoka and a female drummer in the male-dominated music industry I feel incredibly connected with the women in the video. No matter whether you’re a drummer, a rugby player or a firefighter. Women around the world are fighting against stereotypes and paving their own way everyday. That’s why we are both incredibly proud to be part of this campaign and can help send this important message to women everywhere.” says Cari Cari’s Stephanie Widmer aka Louise Yamamoto adding “We LOVE the ad and the message that it sends. Really really proud to be part of this.”
Margaritas in the desert, sex under the open sky and long night drives by the sea. Cari Cari is Lana del Rey meets Queens Of The Stone Age: Worry-free days, red sunsets and the indian summer blues.
Cari Cari is Stephanie Widmer aka Louise Yamamoto (vocals, drums & didgeridoo) and Alexander Koeck (vocals, guitars). The duo released their debut album ‘ANAANA’ in November 2018, likened to “the raw grit of a Cat Power record” (BestBefore, AUS) with “a pinch of Ennio Morricone” (FM4, AUT). They sold out numerous dates on their debut album tour and played at legendary festivals such as Primavera Sound Barcelona (ES), Melt! Festival (DE), Sziget Festival (HU) or The Great Escape Festival (UK).
Cari Cari like to aim high! They say they only founded their band to get their music in a Quentin Tarantino film. While they haven’t quite got there yet, they have managed to keep themselves busy: sold out tours, a charting debut album, various appearances in Hollywood productions (’Shameless’, 'The Magicians’) and Rolling Stone magazine calling their live performance at the legendary Primavera Sound Festival Barcelona “nothing but surreal”.
Travelling has always been a big inspiration for the duo. They’ve lived in London, Hamburg and Madrid, completed a DIY 11-date Australian tour and spent 17 days shooting the video for their breakout song “Nothing’s Older Than Yesterday” in Japan before releasing their debut album ‘ANAANA’ last November. The title of their album - “ANAANA” - is a maori word they picked up while travelling in New Zealand after their Australian tour. The perfect word for a song that sounds and feels like an erupting volcano.
The duo likes to make the most of their band. Louise Yamamoto aka the female half of the duo does not only sing, play drums and the didgeridoo but also is in charge of all Cari Cari artwork and illustrations. “We want to feel like kids acting out a play in our bedroom” says Yamamoto. “Being in Cari Cari gives us the opportunity to not only be musicians, but also be film directors, actors, costume designers and illustrators. It’s very rewarding.”
Japan is an important point of inspiration for the duo. Louise has a black-belt in Judo and has been fascinated by the mysterious country for years, as there’s a rumour in her family that her mother’s real father is Japanese. When short of a video idea for their song “Nothing’s Older Than Yesterday” they decided to live up to their motto, booked two one-way tickets to Japan and shot the music video there.
