‘The Calling EP’ set for release Summer 2019
South African newcomer James Deacon today releases the video for his powerful debut single ‘Not Givin’ Up’, which recently reached #2 on the Hype Machine chart. Shot in Johannesburg late at night and directed by Brennan Lewis, it really captures the essence of James’ home city.
Speaking about the video James says, "We shot all around Johannesburg - we really wanted to show off how amazing the city looks at night! It was epic especially because all the extras are some of the most important people in my life. It was an awesome experience and was a lot of fun to shoot."

Hailing from Johannesburg, 22 year-old multi-instrumentalist, musical prodigy James Deacon teamed up with recording outfit Bad Future Records on the release. ‘Not Givin’ Up’ heralds James Deacon’s awakening to his own powerful determination. A blistering clarion call to those who yearn to give their managers and imposers, their higher ups and inhibitors the two-finger salute and to take their destiny into their own hands. Early support for James has come by way of online tastemakers including, Earmilk, Indie Shuffle, CLASH, When The Horn Blows amongst others.
Speaking about the single James explains, "Not Givin' Up is all about leaving the safety of a day job or desk job and pursuing my dream regardless of how hard it will be to get where I want to go. Basically life is short and I don't want to waste my life cooped up in the same environment until I die. It's a big fuck you to all the bosses I've ever had and all the people who held me back or told me I wasn't good enough."
Despite a life-threatening accident severing tendons in Deacon’s right arm nixing his ability to play the instruments he learned to love (violin at age 4, guitar by way of a chanced-upon Jimi Hendrix Greatest Hits CD at age 10), his forthcoming debut EP “The Calling” draws largely from determination, honesty and authenticity to propel his musical direction. Infusing its lyrics with soaring call-to-action vocals laced with rap and tenor-flecked melodies, cues are taken from soul, blues, hip hop and indie-funk as well as diverse influences that count John Mayer, Nirvana and Al Green to create a deeply personal mixtape dedicated to overcoming circumstance and inspiring courage in others.
With “The Calling EP” James Deacon presents an aural scrapbook with a defiant soul. “Heads are shaking, it’s my awakening”
“Not Givin’ Up’ is out now on Bad Future
